Apple Set to Release iWatch After iPhone 6

The incessant march of mobility has spawned the birth of wearable technology and now big players like Apple have also jumped on the bandwagon. Apple is rumored to be releasing its own version of the smartwatch to combat Android in the form of the iWatch. Here’s some information on what the hype is all about.

The soon to be launched iPhone 6 has been generating waves of interest across the world with Apple fans eagerly awaiting its launch, rumored to be sometime in September. However, the interest generated by the iPhone 6 and the new iOS8 operating system has cast a shadow on yet another important upcoming release by Apple – the iWatch. The iWatch first surfaced in the news back in 2012 as a project being worked on by Apple to set its foothold in the wearable technology market.

Apple’s Wearable Device: The iWatch

Apple finally seems to be coming to terms with the need to expand into newer markets and broaden their product list to cover other market segments. The smartwatch – dubbed iWatch for the moment – will be Apple’s first foray into the wearable technology segment. From the looks of it, we should have the iWatch up for grabs in the coming months, possibly after the launch of iPhone 6 and iOS8.

iWatch: What’s all the fuss about?

While Apple is as usual playing things pretty close to the vest, there are a few tidbits of reliable information regarding the iWatch and its specifications.

Dimensions

Word on the grapevine is that the iWatch will be offered in varying screen sizes ranging from 1.3 to 2.5 inches diagonally. Coincidently, (or perhaps not) this screen size is also shared by Apple’s iPod Nano. Based on the concept model of the iWatch, it will come with an OLED display similar to the iPod Nano and exhibit dimensions of 6.10cm in height and a depth of .50cm. The depth is of particular interest seeing as it will improve the sleekness of the device.

What is most interesting to note is that one model of the iWatch will possibly showcase the new Sapphire Crystal display from GT Advanced, which is the same display being used on the new iPhone 6!

Features

The iWatch is said to boast a wide variety of features some of which may be true while others may simply be rumor. Given that Apple maintains a high level of secrecy around such releases; it would be foolhardy to assume we will actually see each and every feature rumored to be on the iWatch. Taking a few educated guesses, we would have to assume the iWatch will offer such features as biometric readings in conjunction with the iOS HealthKit app, which would allow users to keep track of their health and fitness readings like calories burnt, steps taken, duration of sleep, heart rate, etc.

Apart from health services, the iWatch is also said to offer message, voice calls and iDevice notifications to users. Word on the grapevine also suggests the inclusion of features like wireless charging, advanced mapping and NFC integration. Given this plethora of features, the iWatch is expected to run for a span of 4-5 days after being fully charged.

Release Date

The rumor mill suggests that the iWatch has been slated for release in the upcoming months. Since there has been no confirmation or denial from Apple, we can only assume that it slated for release a month or two after the arrival of the iPhone 6 and iOS8.

Does the iWatch need apps?

Much depends on the popularity of the iWatch and the fan following it gathers. If Apple manages to get the iWatch onto the wrist of a wide customer base, there is a very good possibility that more and more developers would focus on developing apps for the smartwatch. Given the current popularity enjoyed by Apple devices, it is easy to see the iWatch becoming a popular accessory to people’s iDevices.
