Apple finally released its much-awaited iPhone SE- a competitor to iPhone 6S. We compare the features and specs of the new SE and the giant 6S to help you decide what suits you best.

Apple is out with its new iPhone SE after the launch of iPhone 6S (Sep 2015). It’s a Special Edition (SE) launch from Apple, which is said to have the latest features of 6S, but in a smaller size. Many technologists say it is a younger sibling to 6S and 6S Plus flagship. But does that compact size worth buying when we already have all those features available in large screen sizes?

Let’s take a look at some of the distinguished features of iPhone SE and compare it with 6S, in terms of performance and look. For those who have been Apple crazy will be able to make the best choice after reading this. If smaller screens work for you, you may fall for SE.

At a Glance

While some say it’s an iPhone 6S mini, others are tagging iPhone SE as a major improvement to iPhone 5S. Here are a few significant differences between the giant 6S and new arrival, SE considering the screen size, design, display, price, resolution, battery life, camera and many other factors.

Design

The new SE has a comparatively smaller screen than 6S. A 0.7-inch difference in screen size is considerable. Bigger screen also makes 6S heavier than its mini iPhone version; the weight of the phone is 5.04 ounces in contrast to 3.99 ounces. That makes SE an easy device on small hands and can be operated with a single hand- lighter and smaller.

When it comes to display, both the phones have Apple’s retina display and come in the ultimate color finishes including silver, gold, rose gold and space gray.

But both of the devices are smaller than 6S Plus, which has a 5.5-inch Retina display and weighs 6.77 ounces.

Display

The next area where SE surprises Apple users is the display. Even though the resolution in SE is lower than that of 6S, both have the same pixel density, and this is what matters. Further, the two have LED-backlit IPS LCD, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors.

However, there are no improvements to brightness, contrast or response, SE is same as iPhone 5S. Again, one thing extraordinary that only 6S users can experience is 3D touch; SE doesn’t have it. The 3D touch allows users to a single long press and let them take a glance to an app or email before fully looking into it.

Apple’s 3D touch and display zoom are considered two of its highest profile innovations, which are only embedded in 6S and 6S Plus. Of course, something extra offered for a higher price.

Screen-to-body ratio: For iPhone SE, its 60.8% and for iPhone 6S, its 65.6%; the percentages are fine as per screen size and resolutions.

Phone Features

Here are some features these phones have in common:

Camera: Both iPhones feature a brilliant 12-megapixel iSight (rear-facing) camera.
Video Recording: Both are capable of 4K video quality
Live Photos: You can enjoy live photography in these releases
Operating System: SE and 6S are built on iOS 9 and can be upgraded to 9.3. Features like Night Shift mode are available in both

Apple Pay: Make online or store purchases using your iPhone as credit card (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX certified)
Siri: Your intelligent voice assistant is available on both
Browser: HTML5 (Safari)
Battery Life: Stand-by: up to 240 h (3G); talk time: up to 14 h (3G)
Chipset: Apple A9 processor

But there are feature differences too:

Selfies: When it comes to selfie freaks, 6S is a clear winner with as clear as 5.5 MP front-end camera, quite high in comparison to 1.5 MP of SE.
Storage: 6S is sold in 16GB and 64 GB (similar to SE), and is also available in 128 GB storage capacity.
Touch ID sensor: SE uses the first-generation Touch ID fingerprint same as 5S while 6S consists of second-generation Touch ID sensor.

Performance

The all new SE is competent in performance with the huge 6S. If you look at the CPU specifications, it is same as 6S: Dual-core, 1.84 GHz Twister with GPU = PowerVR GT7600 (six-core graphics).

It is predicted that SE is functionally faster as it has to run a small screen with fewer pixels. But customer reviews will tell the best.

iPhone 6S delivers 50% faster and smoother user experience than Apple’s previous versions and also better than 6S Plus. Consequently, iPhone SE is expected to delight users in the future.

Price

The most important concern for all users- whether newbies or Apple enthusiasts is the price. As mentioned, SE starts from $399, much affordable than 6S starting from $649- almost a difference of double.

But then 6S gives you higher storage capacity for your pictures, videos, media files and other important docs. The price increases with the increase in storage. iPhone 6S is also available in 128 GB along with 16 and 64 GB, which is worth the price. SE isn’t sold with a 128 GB storage.

Compare and purchase

Clearly, iPhone Special Edition (SE) outperforms 5S in performance, battery life, camera and many other features, with similar screen size. Evidently, this recently launched Apple device is equally powerful as iPhone 6S. It’s a perfect pick for those who want to own an iPhone in a compact size, which is easy to handle and is affordable.

However, to enjoy the best of Apple inventions until now, go ahead with 6S. You can enjoy 3D touch, which was never possible before on any smartphones. Selfie lovers can take stunning and clear pictures of their own with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera of 6S.

Simply put, Apple has given its aficionados with something new and innovative every time. iPhone SE is yet another addition to the list as it delivers a great potential at less price. So, if a small display with a lot of advanced features lures you, SE will be on top of your next shopping list. One more important news for iPhone fanatics is that Apple is soon going to launch its new smartphone, iPhone 7, later this year.
