Think Big, Think Better with Google Play

Smaller APK file support from Android was a concern till now. However, being a customer centric platform, Android has upgraded their support for APK files to the size 100MB. Is it useful? Is it needed? Let’s read on to know more!

Smartphones are the most prevalent and powerful devices in today’s time. Android phones contribute almost as high as 50% of the total user market shares around the world. This success can be attributed as a result of the delightful user experience and cost effectiveness they have been providing for years. What they offer to their users is rarely found with other operating systems. Androids are used to keep on updating their features as well as version every year. This time, they have made it big and better for thousands of users.

Realizing the fact that the global audience is being challenged with limited hardware supports and is feeling the need for bigger APK file support, the Google Play team has come up with something extraordinary. In order to ensure that all users are able to download, install and open different apps in quickest time, they have released an extended APK file size limit support for Android users. Creators now have the flexibility to create apps of up to 100 MB being pushed up from 50 MB without compromising on the performance. This is a tough balance.

Developers can take advantages of this expansion and will receive a warning when they have crossed the new quota. However, they remind developers to keep other factors like data connectivity, installs etc in mind. It will be interesting to see whether the large files be adaptable for users or not and how the app creators will develop larger sized apps from the next upgrade. They have taken this step to aid and support the budding developers who have dramatic creative ideas for richer apps but were falling short of memory space.

This has created a debate worldwide whether such heavy apps will give an advantage and become a hit or not. Remember before you develop a 100 MB APK file you should be aware of:

Data Connectivity Patterns:

Users around the world have different trends and speed of connections. Richer and developed countries are used to high speed connections whereas developing countries with a large section of mobile usage still rely on slower connections and hence longer time to install an app exceeding 70 MB. This might reduce the chances of installs and downloads.

Data Caps:

Mobile data services around the world provide a limited cap for internet MB to be used each month without charges. Exceeding the limits requires additional charges which mean users can be resilient to downloading large files.

App Performance:

Most of the devices have limited storage space which can hinder app performance as well as slow down the device itself. This can cause un-installations and app removals after a short time. Moreover, a longer install time takes a toll and people give up easily. They want to tap the button and app being installed instantly.

Let’s see whether the rich applications with larger file size be adapted and become the new trend or not!
