Complexity-An Enterprise’s Biggest Enemy

One of the main reasons for increase in complexity is increase in the scale of operations. As the number of functional area enhance along with increase in size, they tend to merge, tangle and intermingle with each other.

As technology has evolved in the last couple of decades, we see bigger and faster apps. Almost everything is now being integrated to software’s and software solution and those that are not are in the processor of doing so. However as the size and usage for the software solutions increases in an enterprise the complexity also scales up. In fact things could become so tedious that it is highly inconvenient to scale up the software and implement it further as the business grows.

One of the main reasons for increase in complexity is increase in the scale of operations. As the number of functional area enhance along with increase in size, they tend to merge, tangle and intermingle with each other. As a result, what we strategize is a far off point from what we implement.

So let us look at various aspects or rather problems that complexity creates and can be removed on its reduction.

1. Lesser effort in training

With increased complexity, it becomes difficult to transfer knowledge from one hierarchy to other. There are just too many layers and functionality becomes complicated to learn and pass on. However with simpler processing, decision making becomes easier and less dependent on the higher members of the hierarchy.

2. Reduction in implementation

As it was stated above with the increase in the size of operation the distance between planning and execution enhances which is not fruitful especially when you are on a deadline. Simpler the operation, easier it is to follow through with it and cross various stages till the last one is reached.

3. Flexibility

More complex the operation harder it would be to scale it or down.  In fact one of the basic conceptual premises we discussed was that as one scales up the operation the complexity increases with it. It is a challenge to keep that simplicity intact and at the same time not compromising on its functionality.

4. Versatility

Another important aspect of complexity is versatility. An application or an enterprise methodology may be required to change half way in between or even several years after its completion. Higher complexity would certainly hinder its resourcefulness in the long run but clearer methods would allow faster expansion and handiness.

5. Cost reduction

Higher complexity would also mean that a firm would have to invest a lot in training and subsequent implementation of the project. However with easier and more intuitive steps, easier implementation is possible thus reducing cost.

6. Time Reduction

In the same way as cost reduction, reduction in complexity also allows reduction in time duration for implementation. This can also be a connected to an ultimate reduction in cost.

There are other angles to look at the benefits of reducing complexity. In a organization that works on a big scales and have a huge repository of human resources it is important that access to individual resources and data is easier. Also, understanding that data, its interpretation and implementation should also be easier.

Decision making has to be quick and precise for the top level management of an enterprise and increased complexity would provide a huge obstacle for the same. Finding cutting edge technology solutions for the same would allow faster growth and higher return on input.
