Apps Will Play Bigger Role in Mobile Future

The 2015 U.S. Mobile App Report by comScore reveals that apps alone represent the majority (almost 54%) of digital media time.

Have you ever calculated the number of hours you spend on your mobile phones? Make a guess.

For some, it may be even more than the time you spend eating, travelling, household working or having face-to-face conversations. According to recent studies, out of the average time spent on digital media by an individual, more than half (around 62%) of it includes the time spent on smartphones and tablets.

Mobile is the cliché today, and its popularity will proliferate in the next 10 years. The reason is clear- today’s consumers are incredibly tech-savvy and will find innovative ways in which their smart devices will serve their needs and luxuries. Mobile apps are more inclined to providing a curated experience to the users. Most businesses and enterprises understand that how and to what extent smartphones will help them stay connected to global audiences and generate more traffic.

According to Forrester Research, there is no single device that will beat mobile, neither wearables nor Internet of Things, at least for the next decade. What can we confer from this? Ultimately, everything you do in your business should reach to consumer’s smartphones. And the best strategy to promote your business is through mobile apps.

Some real-time examples in the recent mobile-first app world make these facts and research more meaningful:

‘Reddit realizes it’s 2016, launches a mobile app.’ A leading online message board in the world, Reddit launched Android and iOS apps in the first week of April. For all users living in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada, the Reddit app will allow them do all their usual browsing via news feeds, posting comments, up-voting and down-voting public stories and user’s comments and posting questions and answers. The company believes that moving to native mobile app will definitely help them increase their user base beyond the current 243 Million monthly users and go mainstream in the social media.

Similarly, ‘Starbucks plans to spend even more to improve its mobile app.’ As per the company, they have invested a lot of their time, money and efforts in mobile app marketing, and this strategy aced their traffic, sales and conversions. After seeing a brilliant ‘app-powered’ year in 2015, the coffee giant is in the best spirits to upgrade their App UX.

One of their strategies includes in-app marketing, which is sending recommendations to existing customers to make more purchases like the way Netflix send suggestions of new and popular TV shows as per user’s watch history and preferences.

In-app marketing has become a favorite of many companies. According to a recent survey by Salesforce, 54% of the global marketers declared that they used mobile apps to advertise their products and services. This percentage is almost double to what it was in 2014 (i.e. 27%).

More companies and industries have woken up to the potential of mobile apps and in-app marketing with the soaring number of mobile users around. Some of the research enterprises predict 2016 to be the greatest and most significant year in the mobile app industry.

One of the fantastic open source online software and questionnaire tools, SurveyMonkey also expands into app insights. Certainly a mobile revolution- this new product SurveyMonkey Intelligence will help companies to track active usage by weekly and monthly periods, customer engagement, audience demographics, let them download revenue numbers and know how different apps perform when compared with others.

A recent research by BI says that Airports around the world will embrace mobile apps by 2018. Without fail, travel research and ticket booking have migrated to mobile in the recent past. Inspired by this mobile power, airports are focusing on providing passenger services by adding various useful tools in their mobile apps.

Navigation through the airport to reach the right terminal and right counter (locating international and domestic to avoid last-minute mess), notification about flight status, in-app advertising and several others are the measures most airports will adopt and implement in the years to come.

By now, each industry is cognizant of the importance of smartphones in an individual’s life and how this transformation is going to influence the world in the future. Developing a mobile app sizes up the customer reach and brings more conversions to the table.

Having the right app and working with the right marketing strategy, a business app can result in the maximum number of user downloads and immeasurable traffic. Just like McDonald’s nailed it early this year. The world’s largest chain of hamburger saw 7 Million downloads of its mobile coupon ad in the U.S., just within three months of its launch in September 2015.

Overwhelmed with these results, McDonald’s CEO, Steve Easterbrook said, ““For the first time, here at McDonald’s we have built in a trading increase, a sale, an incremental sale expectation based on our digital platform,” Realizing the paramountcy of mobile app development, he further added, “And being a platform, this is going to deliver for many years to come as we can kind of understand our consumer behavior and be more rewarding to them.”
