The introduction of Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, PayPal, Paytm is significant to the restaurant payment market.

We’ve already seen a lot of restaurants, cafés, bars and eateries emerging with new trends of developing their own mobile apps. The restaurant industry is not left behind in the race of mobile technology and has taken off with every possible change that involves smartphone usage and mobile apps.

This is the era of cashless future; one of the most intelligent developments in mobile technology is Mobile Payments. Though payment methods made a huge progress in all these years by already replacing cash with cheques moving to debit cards to credit cards to online banking and now to mobile wallets.

Systems like Android Pay, Samsung Pay, Apple Pay are creating channels that will make the payments and overall operations easier, quicker and more reliable for both consumers and restaurant owners. Lately, many food chains like KFC, McDonalds, Waitrose, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts have even started with these mobile payments in some of their stores.

“In addition to allowing users to tap and pay with their Android, Apple, and Samsung devices inside the restaurants, the new mobile payment system will be functional in KFC drive-thrus as well.” This is what the team at KFC reported to the media.

Further KFC’s U.S. Chef Information Officer told, “When we factored in consumer concerns about security and privacy, we identified Android Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay as the best options for our guests.”

This makes sense; apart from the conveniences of paying via mobile and getting rid of the headaches of carrying cash and cards (that loads up the wallet), security and privacy are also critical benefits of paying via smartphones.

People are delighted with the adoption of mobile payments, especially in restaurants as they don’t have to wait for the bill to be brought to the table and then another 5-10 minutes for the process completion. Also, when it comes to pack and carry, people like to get-in and get-out as early as possible, spending a shorter time inside. Mobile cards will help them in saving time; as soon as they checkout, they can check out from the café.

So, fast and smooth is how mobile will help in restaurant payments. The contactless payment apps offer a cohesive omnichannel and frictionless experience for customers keeping them away from security risks and card frauds.

Further, the companies promoting mobile payments are integrating with eateries for providing better offers and incentives to consumers when they visit the same place next time. Like other apps, these mobile payment apps will keep notifying users of new menus introduced by their favorite food chains (the ones they frequently visit) and also about special offers and discounts as it happens in reward and loyalty cards.

Starbucks has achieved tremendous success in implementing mobile payments in its various stores in U.S., Europe, UK (soon to be implemented in India). Together with, their mobile ordering has also received a good response from customers as it has allowed users to not stand and wait in long queues for placing the order but order in advance from their mobile phones anywhere, anytime.

According to recent announcements by Google, Android Pay is also receiving ATM support and mobile web functionality. There would be a range of new developer tools for contactless payment services.

Moving ahead with restaurant payments, one of the cost-effective advantages to consumers is saving money on credit card fees. Various mobile payment companies like LevelUp and Square charge a relatively lesser on per transaction compared to credit cards. For instance, Square mobile payments charge around 2.75% of each sale as a transaction cost from businesses.

Unlike scanning mobile phones for payments as done in Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay, mobile payments also include mobile wallets like PayPal, Paytm and others, which ensure that consumers can do everything from ordering to receiving (and using) loyalty points to paying via a mobile app, and just relaxing in the café and bars.

But then, restaurant owners have to decide what payments options available in the marketplace are best for them. Some brands may find PayPal more optimal than Apple Pay and others may find Android Pay more trustworthy than Paytm. This will be coupled with the adoption process and the owners will understand it better when they implement mobile payments.

All said, customers are extremely tech-forward now and if they get to order and pay quick and easy in a restaurant or any eating place (for that matter), they are certainly going to download a mobile app for that.
