“Twilio announces EOL for its Programmable Video Service from December 2024”
In a shocking announcement, Twilio has announced the EOL (end of life) for its programmable video service, Twilio Video, dropping an unexpected bomb on its users. Additionally, the company is no longer accepting new users to their programmable video service and the existing users can use the product until 5th Dec, 2024 only.
This has left the users looking for other Twilio alternatives but in a relief, the company has partnered with Zoom, the Video communication company, to offer their Video SDK as an alternate.
Note – “Twilio will also not release any future feature enhancements to its Programmable Video Service”
Twilio Video SDK is a video-based software development kit that allows people to add real-time communication on their web or app platforms. Twilio allows developers to use SDKs, APIs, and other tools to record, capture, distribute, and render top-quality video & audio apps.
However, the decision to end the video service has left the service users in trouble, making them look for other Twilio alternatives.
According to CEO Jeff Lawson, the decision was made as the product is a small part of the total Twilio portfolio. The decision will help the company focus on other major parts of the platform, i.e. Voice, Email, & Messaging.
The decision has left many developers and businesses wondering about the future of their video-based platforms.
In their own words –
“Removing Programmable Video from our portfolio will also allow Communications to more effectively focus on our pillar products – Messaging, Voice, and Email.” – Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson
Twilio has also announced its partnership with the video meeting app, Zoom, to migrate Twilio Video to Zoom Video SDK. The platform has also offered a migration guide to help developers avoid any service disturbance.
Zoom Video SDK is also a Twilio alternative that offers similar developer-centric, all-customization services for users.
However, the migration from Twilio Video to Zoom Video SDK is going to be a headache and complex for users, and thus hiring a reliable developer is recommended.
In their own words –
“We recommend migrating your application to the API provided by our preferred video partner, Zoom. We’ve prepared this migration guide to assist you in minimizing any service disruption”
